A rare white varietal planted in 1999, Viognier is the Flagship white wine of the Northern Rhone region of France and is considered the "Red Wine Drinkers’ White Wine". I vinify our Viognier in the traditional French Style, "sur lie" in neutral French Oak. This vintage is rich and full bodied resulting from our long, warm season. Each berry had a red dot in the center which I had never seen before in our Viognier giving the wine a deep 24 karat gold appearance and a floral bouquet ranging from ripe pineapple to rich apricot nectar. I nick-named this vintage "pineapple express!"
Awards: Wine writers go crazy over this wine. Laura Ness “What do Women Want” on her recent visit to Amador County: “When you visit the Sierra Foothills start with Cedar Creek Viognier, and end with Cedar Creek Viognier!”
Mike Dunn, Sacramento Bee wrote: ”Best Viognier I have ever tasted- A rare gem, this wine is not to be missed!”
Food pairings: Highly aromatic, our 2017 Viognier complements citrus flavors, curries, Indian cuisine, fish and shellfish. Try with smoked Halibut, baked Salmon, grilled chicken, seared scallops, or eggs benedict! On its own you can swirl and sip a glass of Viognier for a refreshing palette cleanser.
Viticulture and Winemaking
Variety: Viognier, planted 1999 in single vineyard block, is the Flagship white variety from the Northern Rhone of France. It’s often known as the “Red wine-drinkers’ White wine” because of its depth and full-bodied flavor.
History: Viognier is an ancient wine with an unknown origin. It’s possible that the Viognier grape originated in the region that is now Croatia, and the Romans later popularized this variety.
Background: Viognier is beloved for its fruity aroma; carrying the scent of apricot, peach, and honeysuckle. It ranges from these scents to creamier aromas of vanilla with added hints of nutmeg and clove. The flavor is heavily dependent on the vintage.
Region: Fair Play, El Dorado County, Sierra Foothills
Production: 105 cases
Fermentation: “Sur Lie” in neutral French Oak. Sur Lie means wine is barrel fermented “on the lees” being stirred 2x per day by winemaker until primary fermentation is complete. Wine is then racked off the lees into clean barrels for aging until bottling.
Winemakers Notes: Our vineyards in the expansive Sierra Foothills have great personality, and our Viognier grapes are grown in an exceptional location among them. 2017 was a perfect year for ripening with plenty of spring rain to push the development of the fruit along into late fall. This vintage came in with a bouquet of pineapple and other tropical fruits, rich apricot nectar, and fresh picked roses. Viognier is a grape that gives and gives, both in the vineyard and in the glass!
